Examines the traditions of comic and fabulous discourse in the non-Western world, considering it historically in the light of traditional theories of the comic and examining texts in the light of the work on carnival, novelness and dialogism initiated by Mikhail Bakhtin. The book uses sociological, anthropological and psychological theories of comedy and suggests the adoption of a specific historical perspective applicable to the conditions of colonial and post-colonial discourse.
