This new series combines the best features of 'Landscapes' with all the detail you would expect in a hefty general guide, but they are all pocket size and in full colour. All the authors have been visiting Turkey for many years, writing general and walking guides. Dean Livesley was one of the original developers of the famous Lycian Way, Turkey's first long-distance footpath. Besides being intrepid explorers, Brian and Eileen Anderson are botanists and keen cooks! The main part of this book concentrates on the area west of Antalya, known both in antiquity and today as Lycia. Historical descriptions of the wild, fissured Lycian coastal region abound with superlatives. And the landscapes that sent so many writers into raptures have not changed for centuries. Despite all the hymns of praise, Lycia's thinly populated coastal strip long remained untouched by tourism. It was so isolated that for a short time, it even became a place of exile. Today, thanks to the building of Antalya's international airport, millions of visitors happily spend their holidays in the places where unwanted dissidents were once forcibly detained.
The whole Lycian Peninsula takes in a very large area and this volume concentrates on the region between Antalya and Demre/Kekova, east of Kas. Coverage includes: getting there and getting about; recommended accommodation, campsites and restaurants (all with prices); practicalities A-Z; history; 15-20 main walks with many variations, all with large-scale topographical maps; fold-out area maps; detailed town plans showing locations of all sights, hotels and restaurants; and many 'feature' panels.
