Long after the end of wartime hostilities, many civilian populations remain extremely vulnerable to the threat posed by land mines. In his thought-provoking project entitled One Step Beyond: The Mine Revisited, photographer Lukas Einsle establishes concrete relationships between land mines and their victims. Working in some of the most heavily mined countries in the world--Angola, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Cambodia--Einsle spoke with victims of mine explosions, who provided him with first-hand accounts of their accidents as well as "crime-scene" sketches. He photographed each victim with a large-frame camera and juxtaposed each personal tale with documentary material showing the type of land mine that may have been responsible for the accident. In addition to Einsle's extensive research and documentation One Step Beyond, also contains articles by contributing authors who approach the subject of mines from political, philosophical, medical and humanistic points of view. This two-volume set provides additional information on subjects such as mine-clearing activities, public education programs and rehabilitation projects.
