The Reagan presidency coincided in the United States with the appearance on the political scene of organizations, such as Jerry Falwell's "Moral Majority", committed to bringing God back into American politics. Drawing on survey data and interviews with activists, this study charts the rise in popularity of these organizations, evaluates their achievements and influence on national politics, and analyzes their failure to re-make the United States as "one nation under God". The author concludes by considering the political possibilites for religious minorities in modern societies. Steve Bruce is also the author of "Firm in the Faith: The Survival of Conservative Protestantism", "No Pope of Rome: Militant Protestantism in Modern Scotland"and "God save Ulster! The Religion and Politics of Paisleyism".
