This catalogue accompanies Phoebe Washburns major exhibition at the Deutsche Guggenheim. The New York-based artist creates sculptures of common and discarded materials that often completely fill the gallery spaces in which they are installed. Made from cardboard, wood and other materials frequently considered rubbish that she finds in dumpsters and alleys, these structures often express an undulating, animated rhythm that comes from the different shapes and thicknesses of the individual pieces. For this commission, she has engaged her interest in factories and assembly lines to create a system that supports the growth of living organisms. She has transformed the Guggenheim galleries into a self-contained factory, where visitors watch the production of ground plots sections of grass grown inside wooden planter boxes as they move along a conveyor belt loop, receiving light and water. Finished ground plots are employed to create a sod roof on top of the structure, where they are left to wilt and decay.
