In 1949, having finished with my boarding school education in the Himalayas, I was desperate to leave Pakistan and head for England; an impossible dream without the wherewithal to do so. But fate intervened in the hated form of my mother's lover, a colonel in the British Army, who gave me good cause to strike him senseless one day. The wonderful result: my elder brother and I were despatched to England by air, ten days later, with very little cash and nowhere to stay. My story covers just five years of my life in the dreary 1950s. It tells of how a member of the House of Lords attempted to seduce me the day after I arrived in England and of my many adventures and misadventures thereafter; the numerous, extraordinary jobs I accepted just to survive. For example, my involvement in hazardous experiments relating to the atomic bomb and assessing psychopaths for a mad psychiatrist. Then, too, there is my ambition to be a professional singer, leading from winning talent competitions to fronting a well-known big band; an unforgettable audition at the Windmill theatre, a film test for the part of Romeo and a close friendship with Barbara Andrews and her daughter, the famous Julie.
