This work examines the different manifestations of the European nation-state phenomenon: the centralism of France and the UK; the federalism of Germany and Austria; the cantonalism of Switzerland; the regionalism of Spain and Italy; and the potential separatism of areas like Scotland, Flanders and Catalonia. Drawing on his own studies and those of major international research organizations, the author then goes on to describe the growing alienation of the younger generation of Europeans. He concludes with an examination of the case for a "Europe of the Regions", within the framework of the EU.
