The theme of this treatise is the possibility of a radical reform of industrial society. It is widely thought that modern society is condemned by its own technical rationality to authoritarian management and mindless work. This book challenges that assumption and reconceptualizes the relation of technology, rationality and democracy. The author argues that the degradation of labour, as well as many environmental, educational and political problems, are rooted in the social values that preside over technological development. Reforms that ignore this fact will fail, including such currently popular notions as simplifying life and supporting spiritual values while leaving technology essentially unchanged.
