Blackwell Companion to Major Social Theorists brings together essays by leading experts in social theory on classic and contemporary social theorists. Designed to serve as a reference work for sociologists and those in related disciplines with an interest in social theory, this text might also serve as a basic text in courses in social theory. It is oriented to not only the American, but also the international, scholarly community as a definitive reference to the major theorists. Each of the essays contains the following material on each thinker: The Theory : An overview of the social theorist's work with an emphasis on the most important contributions to social theory highlighting the most important works and the most important contributions to the history of social theory. The Person . This section will offer a biographical sketch of the theorist. Emphasis will be placed on the genesis of important works and ideas. Special attention will be devoted to the influence of important events and people. The Social Context . The focus here will be on the social context in which a theorist lived and the impact of that context on a theorist's work.
Attention will be devoted primarily to the changing nature of the society in which the thinker lived. The Intellectual Context . This parallels the preceding section and will deal with a thinker's intellectual context and its impact on his/her work. Impact . The prime concern in this section will be the effect of a thinker's work on later social theory. This will involve a discussion of the later, and in many cases continuing, influence of a thinker's work on social thought. Where appropriate there will also be a discussion of the impact of a thinker's work on the social world. Assessment . Each chapter will conclude with an evaluation by the author of the social theorist's work and its continuing and future impact on social theory. Bibliography . This will include the theorist's most important works, as well as key secondary works.
