Drawn from a variety of collections, this unique and largely unpublished archive of 250 photographs with captions and introductory matter documents the entire history of the famous fighter station. Starting with the First World War and Sutton's Farm there are images of aircraft, buildings and the men of the RFC. Pre-war (1928-1938) illustrates the buildup of the airfield, and the various new types of aircraft flying from the station such as the Spitfire, Hurricane and Blenheim. Not forgetting the pilots who would become famous in wartime. The Second World War period forms the largest section covering the five years of war and most specifically Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain, Dieppe and the offensive into Europe, with the aircraft and pilots, ground crews, Waafs and VIPs being especially featured.
Post-war the airfield hosted an aircrew selection center, Number 17 Central Reserve Flying School and various air displays. All are covered, together with photos of the airfield demolition, and what is left of RAF Hornchurch today. A must for the collector, historian and veteran of the times, it will also be of huge local interest.
