Through Minnie Dakin we are introduced to the little-known world of the ropemakers who lived in caves - in entire villages underground - in eighteenth century Derbyshire. We follow the fortunes of Minnie's family and of her sister, Netty, in particular. Netty's marriage takes her away from the cave, and she is eventually joined by Minnie in Sheffield. Their experiences in a town at the beginning of the industrial revolution are described in compelling, touching detail.
