The dramatic rise of China as a global military and economic power in the 1990s has necessitated re-examination of China's evolving relationship with its Northeast Asian neighbours. This volume summarizes findings of a project conducted by Pacific Forum/CSIS. Bringing together representatives from five countries with strong interests in the region - China, Russia, South Korea, Japan and USA - the project addressed economic topics such as the status of China's economy, increasing Chinese economic integration within the region, and environmental problems posed by China's rapid economic development. The project contributors also comment on China's political relations with its Northeast Asian neighbours and emerging threats to regional security, the effects of China's rapid modernization of its armed forces and China's role in diffusing tensions on the Korean peninsula, as North Korea seeks to develop a nuclear arsenal.
