In 1876, Jim Butler - Quaker, teetotaller and, later, newspaper editor - arrived in the Eastern Cape as a sickly 22-year-old Londoner, recuperating from a serious illness. During his two-and-a-half-year stay, he kept a journal for his family back home, recording daily life, politics, natural history and social encounters. This edition has been re-edited and annotated.
