The Grade II Listed Edwardian Rock Garden in Aysgarth, Wensleydale is a rare surviving example of the work of James Backhouse and Son of York, and is of national significance within the history of horticulture. In this book current owner Rosemary Anderson reveals the history of the garden via two stories separated in time by around one hundred years - that of its creation in the early twentieth century by Frank Sayer Graham of nearby Heather Cottage, and that of its re-creation after restoration in the early twenty-first century by the then owners, Angela and Peter Jauneika. The author also discusses the nineteenth century fashion for rock gardening and explains how James Backhouse and Son came to prominence as a nursery firm specialising in alpines and the construction of rockwork. Throughout the book the stories are brought to life by eighty illustrations, many in full colour, and a detailed descriptive guide to the garden is provided as an appendix.
