Since 1989 the Sudan has been ruled by a powerful and seemingly secure Islamic fundamentalist regime, the first in such a predominantly Arab country. Islamic Hegemonies reviews the historical background to what is happening in the Sudan today, examining in turn the three phases of Islam in the country: Sufism, Mahdism and contemporary Fundamentalism. Professor O'Fahey's book is based on the premise that the government in Khartoum is best understood as an interaction between international Islamic Fundamentalism and the specific Sudanese context. Drawing on recent research by Sudanese scholars and others, Islamic Hegemonies will be seen as a corrective to J.S. Trimingham's now outdated Islam in the Sudan (CUP, 1949). An annotated bibliography of the main writings on Islam in the Sudan in Arabic and European languages is included.
