This is a supplement for group work courses that enables instructors to teach skill-building through active participation in groups. It could also be used as part of any human services course to facilitate active learning. Students learning to conduct groups or group counseling or to facilitate social work practice with groups will appreciate these exercises and should keep this supplement as part of their social work library when they enter practice. The exercises can be used with many different types of groups, including students in classroom settings; various kinds of therapy, including hospital therapy; and workshops. The text identifies different group stages and presents exercises that are suitable for each stage. Clearly and accurately described, each exercise provides the actual language that can be used by group facilitators; variations of each exercise are provided, as well as "Tips," or practical suggestions for dealing with a broad range of group process issues. A chapter on evaluation (Ch. 9) provides creative formats for evaluating groups.
