This catalogue captures Nicholas Romeril's first solo show at Chris Beetles Gallery in 2013. It was an exhibition of 50 new paintings that showcased a body of work that captures the essence of his native Jersey. Inspired by simply walking along the beach, Nicholas Romeril uses canvas and slate to produce versatile motifs of sand dunes, boulders and foaming seas that allow him to encapsulate not only the raw power of nature, but also its beauty and serenity. His work demonstrates a Pre-Raphaelite attention to detail, yet his paintings are drawn more from memory and experience, and skilfully interpreted as a sensation of a particular time and place, and as a celebration of island life. The power of these works lies in the simplicity of the subject, exquisitely realised. A graduate of Camberwell College of Art and Design, Nicholas Romeril returned to his island home in 1996. He has exhibited regularly in Jersey, as well as in France and Switzerland. That he has recently been chosen as one of four ambassadors for the Jersey Tourism Campaign, attests to Nicholas Romeril's rightful place as the Channel Islands' most successful and popular artist.
