Prejudice is one of the most widely taught courses on undergraudate social psychology programmes, yet there are few undergraduate texts which treat the topic in a comprehensive fashion. This book aims to remedy this by covering all the major social psychological aspects of prejudice. The book is dominated by three recurring issues: the ordinariness and prevalence of prejudice; the fact that prejudice is both a cognitive phenomenon and an affective process; and, most importantly, the social nature of prejudice. Throughout, readers are introduced to the major theoretical and empirical issues, with a wide range of examples from the US, Britain, Europe and Australia. Although many examples are drawn from the field of interethnic relations, the book also looks at gender and age discrimination, attitudes to people with AIDS and learning difficulties.
