A virtual private network (VPN) is a private data network that makes use of the public telecommunication infrastructure. It gives the user the same capabilities at much lower cost by using the shared public infrastructure rather than a private one. A VPN makes it possible to have the same secure sharing of public resources for data as already known from voice messages. The four main implementations of IP-VPNs (router-based, firewall-based, dedicated hardware-based and NOS-based) require skills in each of these for a rounded treatment of practical design and implementation issues, and proper consideration of alternative solutions.
"IP-VPNs": provides a complete reference that integrates all of the VPN aspects (technology, standards, architecture) into one book; is a practical guide that explains how to implement this cost effective new technology; covers fundamentals of VPNs, building blocks of VPN solutions, standards and the new generation of IP-VPN solutions and services; explores how key equipment vendors implement IP functionality in their products as well as principles of VPN management, design, development and integration with other network infrastructure; and includes several case studies on enterprises and service providers (MPLS, IPSec). It is a timely publication for all Network architects and designers, technical managers, technical directors, product/account managers.
