This field guide focuses on the wild flowers of the Highveld and surrounding areas. Designed as a practical identification handbook, it aims to help nature-lovers in the field identify the various wild flowers they encounter. The 763 species described in this book are divided into six colour groups, so that colour is the first clue to the flower's identity. Within the colour group the species are organized into families, each defined by its diagnostic characters. Flowers occurring in more than one colour group can be found in each relevant group. Each species is illustrated by a full-colour photograph, selected to show the distinctive features of the plant. The photographs are arranged into more than 130 plates, facilitating comparison of similar species. The text describing each species, its habitat and flowering times is placed opposite the relevant plate. Leaf drawings for many of the species accompany their descriptions and a chapter on the region's most common grasses completes the identification parade. The introduction provides insights into the evolution and classification of flowers, a discussion of plant families and tips on identifying plants.
Also is included is an illustrated glossary designed to help clarify technical terms used.
