Trained in painting in both Korea and New York, Oh Chi Gyun's knowledge and influences are evident in the thickly textured paintings of landscapes and streetscapes for which he is best known. He is one of the only artist's today working in the Impressionist style and he is able to impart a mood on the viewer of his works, whether scenes of the American Southwest, New York City or a country village in Korea. As author Richard Vine writes, 'Oh defies landscape not by its physical components but by the mental traces they leave on our feelings and intellect'. His paintings can be both pleasing and uplifting with their pastel colours and intense bright washes of light, but he also has the ability to convey the gloom and misery of snow-covered village or a rainy urban street.
