Maxim Kammerer and Toivo Glumov, both working for an organization which investigates "Unexplained Events". Their investigation of a series of events leads them to believe that they are witnesses to a new action by some supecivilization of Wanderers on Earth.
But after much investigation, they discovered that it was not Wanderes, but a secret group of superhumans called the Ludens. The Ludens are born human, but possess latent powers far beyond those of normal humans. They view themselves as a distinct race, and claim to have "different interests" from humanity at large. The Ludens by means of special secret methods look for the humans who have the capacity to become a Luden.
Kammerer and Glumov's investigation unmasks the Ludens, and they are made public in what would later be called "The Great Revelation". All of a sudden, the Ludens discover that Toivo Glumov himself is a carrier of the "third impulse" required to transform a human into a Luden, and Glumov must decide whether or not to join their race.
