The year is 2015, the place, South Australia. Amateur archaeologist, Larry Kreusler, acting for Farrel, an Aboriginal elder, travels to Lake Eyre where a prehistoric skull fragment was found. In the course of the journey Larry meets a Chinese couple, Dai-Tai and Kwai, Diana, an astrologer, her brother, Simon, a Jesuit Brother, Pete, an authority on Bonsai, and is seduced by Brenda, an Aboriginal lawyer. At Lake Eyre he and Brenda uncover a circular rock formation. Larry reports to Farrel who extends his contract to excavate, Larry's long-time friend, Nick, providing technical expertise. Managing the project is Meredith, accompanied by her unusual son, Kyle. A spacecraft is unearthed and transported to Adelaide where Project Lazarus aims to revive it. Dia-Tai, an advisor to the Project returns with Kwai. Diana, Simon and Pete are reintroduced to the story together with her husband, Silas, a computer scientist turned conservationist.
