Only an Irish Boy by Horatio Alger begins with a dialogue between two boys: John a page and Godfrey, the master's son. The young servant, the horse boy, is in the stable when Master Godfrey orders him to prepare the horse, for he wants to take the horse for a ride. The servant is a bit reluctant.

This opening beginning leads to the situations where our hero, the young Irish boy, seems to be really struggling with the people, trying to decide who to obey and who not to. The story develops with the increasing experience of the boy. It is the story of struggle, misfortunes, and ultimate fortune, and it continues to maintain the element of interest till the concluding part.
