This study of the maintenance of Army aircraft is one of a number of histories dealing with material activities of the Army Air Forces during World War II. For the most part, the study was written at Wright Field, headquarters of AAF services and procurement agencies, by Capt. Robert W. Ackerman of the Materiel Section, AAF Historical Office. The following broad phrases of aircraft maintenance are covered: maintenance practices before 1939, the development of headquarters control of maintenance during World War II, the expansion of the air depots, the experiment with the sub-depots, contract overhaul agencies, wartime maintenance policies, Production Line Maintenance, and inspection, minor repair, and overhaul procedures. Readers familiar with this subject are invited to forward criticisms and suggestions to the AAF Historical Office. For this purpose perforated pages are attached at the back of the study."
