On first acquaintance Dutch seventeenth century painting seems chiefly a matter for city dwellers. Nearly all the painters lived in towns and cities where they worked for a broad section of affluent burghers. However, that does not imply that we only have urban life in paintings of the period. This book, with its animated layout, explores the way in which the countryside was depicted in Dutch seventeenth-century painting. It shows vivid, bolder landscapes as well as scenes of peasants drinking, livestock and still lifes with hunting bounty. This is the fifth in a series of books highlighting distinctive areas of the collection of the Mauritshuis Museum in The Hague.
