This overview of the state of British theatre in the 1980s examines the artistic, political, social and financial elements of the theatre. The text includes discussions between the author and leading theatrical figures and provides an analysis of the theatrical successes and failures of the decade. His adaptation of Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath" won an Edinburgh Fringe First award in the 1987 Edinburgh Festival and his account of its writing "Staging Steinbeck" has also been published.
