On the banks of the White Cart Water in the historic county of Renfrewshire lies one of the largest towns in Scotland: Paisley. Despite being just a few miles from Glasgow city centre, this historic town is quite different from its larger neighbour and has its own distinct identity. In the nineteenth century, it was here that the world famous Paisley Pattern Shawls were born, as the town thrived during the heyday of the thread industry. This prosperity enabled Paisley to build many of its grand buildings, including the Town Hall, museum, library and churches. By 1993, however, the town's mills had all closed their doors, and the industry of old is now a part of the town's history. This unique collection of old and new images chronicles the story of Paisley, capturing the many ways in which the town has changed over time.
