Emily Dennistoun lives alone with her elderly tyrannical father at Borriston Hall in the south of Scotland. She has few companions since her much loved governess was dismissed, and lives mainly through her writing. But on the night of a terrible storm when a fishing-boat from the village is lost, she meets Kitty, widowed in the tragedy, and forms a closer bond with her brother Charles. Charles introduces her to a bohemian couple and their friend Francis, to whom Emily is irresistably attracted. And despite vicissitudes of fortune, despite the deliberate malice of a couple of thwarted minxes, despite uncertainties, loneliness and unhappiness, Emily holds steadfast to a love she knows is true. Originally entitled 'The Strong Thing' after the line by Robert Browning, "Truth is the strong thing", this book was written in the 1930s but has never before been published.
