Horatio Alger's story The Young Bank Messenger revolves around a poor country boy.

The poor boy is cheated out of his inheritance; the boy takes a job at a Nebraska bank and helps capture a notorious outlaw. Aka: A Cousin's Conspiracy, A Boy's Struggle For and Inheritance. Before his death, Uncle Peter informs Ernest that they are not related; Ernest's father had been denied a large inheritance because a cousin, Stephen Ray, had cut him out. When Ernest's father died, Ernest was put in the care of Peter. When Peter dies, he leaves money with Ernest, who heads to California with Luke Robbins. In Nebraska, they see a poster which promises a reward for the capture of two bank robbers, whom they capture. Tired of Nebraska, Ernest and Luke decide to mine for gold. They have little luck, so when Ernest is given the opportunity to run a store, he accepts. But Ernest's life changes forever when a lawyer with important information puts an ad in a newspaper to contact him.
