Seventeen-year old Tilly Ashton finds employment as a parlour-maid at Gower House, the home of Lord and Lady Mortimer. She meets and falls in love with the local police Constable, Thomas Deering. After an uncertain start to their relationship, Thomas proposes marriage. Tilly is overjoyed and accepts.
