This handbook provides a comprehensive guide to the analysis and design of staircases, escalators and moving walkways. It presents the various analytical and numerical designs, experimental methods and assessments in simplified form. Early chapters deal with staircases, covering the general requirements for the analysis, design and structural detailing of staircases in various materials. All the available classical methods including those developed by Taleb, Gould, Libenberg, Siev, Morgan and Cohen follow, with numerous examples. Numerous design examples are given of freestanding and other geometric staircases and their elements and components. These examples relate to the cases studies given in the earlier chapters and all examples are checked using appropriate Eurocodes, British and American Codes. The section concludes with the necessary structural detailing. Escalators and moving walkways are described, beginning with manufacturers' data and various codified methods including the design loads and materials properties. Static and dynamic analyses are given for various elements and components and the dynamic analysis of interaction of the escalators is given in detail.
Structural detailing of escalators and their components is also covered. Planning, codified methods and analysis, and design case studies are included throughout. Design examples are given on essential items relating to staircases and escalators. Appendices provide a comprehensive bibliography and facilitate a comparative study of different international practice and code requirements.
