The two books couldn't be more different, contemporary drama versus paranormal mystery, but they've got black women finding their mates and kicking ass.
As a genre hopper, I LOVE finding authors that can switch around so no matter the mood or craving I can trust an author to do right. And guess what?
I cannot wait for more of this series and Shyla Colt!
About Witch for Hire:
Content Warning: Discussion of previous rape by deception.
Let's get the few rough spots out of the way, shall we?
It was difficult at times, especially in the beginning, to follow along due to the lack of details in both world building and setting descriptors. For instance, there wasn't a description or breath between her entering a house and being seated with a group of new people.
I knew immediately who was behind the curtain once the witch gave out the hint. Usually, this is a bigger problem but several different threads and it's short length kept me happily going. Plus, I wasn't exactly sure how it would go down.
Everything else? Pretty dang good.
The magical set up is impressive. Love the Supernatural references and quips, but really, where's The Craft love?!? I REALLY need a not so powerful witch and a witch that became one to join the crew. The fact someone can DO that is begging for a spot, please!]
I was surprised at the Christian lore inclusion with the witchery but maybe that's just my heathen ass.
The rift between Lou and Cristobal is the most understandable reason I've ever read for soul mates splitting up. In fact, I'm still rather ticked at him.Talking this out then wouldn't have fixed it. Talking it out isn't how they fixed it now either.
If you ever, ever get treated like this, know you do not have to forgive or stay in the relationship. That feeling of violation? Totally understandable! In fact, there's a term for it: rape by deception.
Too bad they didn't call it what it is on the page. It'd be a helpful addition for rape awareness and feminism in fiction.
Other Things of Note:
- It gets better as it goes along. Give it some time to work its magic.
- Romani people and werewolves do exist and are present in the background.
- I love the black matriarchal family but the found families are where my heart lies.
- There are side jaunts that might come back up in later installments or make for some good short stories.
- Time to be relieved or disappointed: they do get hot and heavy but there are no full sex scenes on the page.
