This play is set in the condemned cell of a Pretoria jail where Stoffel and Nak, two white murderers due to be hanged the next morning, are still deluding themselves that a reprieve is possible. Both the murders are racially motivated although neither of the victims is black. The sexual play-acting, brutal verbal and physical assault, and the disintegration into terror are chartered. The play "Dogs, Sons of Dogs! Murderers!! Fascists!!!", which won the Verity Bargate Award in 1989, is also included in this book. Michele Celeste won the first prize in the 1982 World Wildlife Fund/Young Vic Theatre International Playwriting Competition.
