This is an investigation in "The Twentieth Century" series which covers a wide variety of subjects and follows their progression and development during the twentieth century. This title looks at the changing techniques of warfare during the twentieth century, divided into six chapters covering the various types of warfare. The discussion extends from trench warfare, the invention of the machine gun, tanks and landing troops behind enemy lines to the development of the aeroplane which revolutionized warfare. War in the air, Blitzkrieg and the flying bomb or "doodlebug" are also discussed as is the beginning of the nuclear arms race which arose out of missile developments. The concluding chapter is concerned with the cost of war both in human life and financially.
