One of the most persistant criticisms of Kolb's Futures, Options, & Swaps has been the book's length and depth of coverage. Ideal for MBA and upper-level courses on derivatives, the text's size has hindered adoptions in lower-level courses, where the material is seen as overwhelming and too much to cover in a semester-long course. Feedback from a number of instructors contacted during the telemarketing of FOS 4e suggested that a concise, introductory version of the text would be welcome (sample comment: "Book is too large and overwhelming for his course; would adopt if you had a much shorter baby Kolb edition"). To meet this need, Kolb and co-author James Overdahl present a concise introduction to the material covered in greater detail in Futures, Options, & Swaps. Specifically designed for a one-semester (or shorter) introductory course on derivatives, the authors will cover the basics of futures, options, and swaps with the same accessibility for which the larger text is known. Students will appreciate Kolb's intuitive style and Overdahl's practical insights into derivatives markets.
The contents will be extensively reviewed to insure that this text will meet the needs of instructors teaching at this level. Much of the supplemental material designed for the 5th edition of Futures, Options, and Swaps can be repackaged for the Fundamentals book, including the Option! software and case studies. In addition, a study guide, instructor's manual, test bank, and PowerPoint slides will compliment the text. It is worthwhile considering bringing on a freelance supplements editor to oversee the material for this book and the new edition of FOS.
