This is a chronological assessment of Beckett's poetry, prose and plays. Dr Kiberd draws out of this study two main theories. First there is Beckett the religious writer, whose forms approximate to prayers and meditations and which confess their own limitations and inadequacies. Secondly Dr Kiberd plumbs the political unconscious in Beckett's work, exploring ways in which his characters are at war with the cultural colonialism that reduces the Irish people to stereotypes and myths.
