This new reference book approaches theatre as a living and collective activity and not simply as a literary form. It covers the whole range of activities and skills that make up `theatre' from directing to design, from playwrighting to acting, from marketing to stage management. At the core of the book are the actors, playwrights and plays that form the heart of twentieth century theatre. Relationships between theatre and other media - particularly, television, film, radio, visual art, poetry and the novel - are examined as are the roles of, for example, the audience, the critic, the translator and the theatre space itself. There are articles on individual theatres, cities and drama schools. The main focus is on the English-speaking world, also including the theatre of continental and central Europe, Scandinavia, the former Soviet Union and the Far East. The Companion will embrace not only serious theatre but also aspects of music hall, dance, mime, puppets, circus and pantomime.
Supervised by an international team of advisory editors, including Robert Marx of NYPL, the entries are written by a team of over a hundred contributors from all parts of the English-speaking world, including professional playwrights, actors, directors and theatre critics. They are arranged alphabetically with cross referencing and a full index. Articles carry bibliographies and further reading lists, and there will be a chronology of principal theatre events. The Companion will be appropriately illustrated with diagrams and black and white halftones.
