A memoir of the author’s nineteen-year career with the leading Australian meat exporter Thomas Borthwick and Sons which allowed him a unique perspective on how different countries and cultures interact with new foods and meat options. Representing Borthwicks in Japan during the tumultuous mid 1970s gave him and his wife Lois an appetite to learn more of all aspects of Japanese culture.
While in Japan John helped form the Tokyo Piping Society and led it for several years. The role opened up new windows of discovery into the blending of Japanese and foreign cultures. In the meantime, his wife Lois was an intrepid traveller to all parts of Japan and became immersed in many traditional activities such as ikebana and several traditional artistic media. After four years in Hong Kong, John continued to be involved in export market development until his retirement but has maintained close personal ties with Japan and his ongoing love for the country, its people and their rich, vibrant culture is what inspired him to write this memoir.
