How does later life really feel? Drawing on numerous printed and recorded autobiographical recollections and a set of life story interviews with three generations of families, this study attempts to provide insight into how ordinary men and women have viewed old age over the last 150 years. The pensioners included in the text, from their 60s to their 80s, see retirement as a challenge and an opportunity to develop new skills in work and leisure, caring for others, grandparenting, companionship, and love.
