Lucas Beck and Melinda (Lindy) James grew up together. They lived right next door to one another. Their fathers were police partners and their mothers are best of friends. When Lindy loses her father at nine years of age, Lucas’s dad stepped in and became a father like figure to Lindy as well. Lucas and Lindy are the best of friends. Lucas climbs into Lindy’s window since they’ve known each other, each night. They spent their nights originally talking and forming a strong friendship! Soon the friendship Lindy has come to cherish turns to love for Lucas. As they grew older, Lucas became popular and pulled away from Lindy. Lindy wasn’t so lucky with the popularity contest. She was constantly picked on and called mean names. Lucas doesn’t acknowledge Lindy much in school but he still climbs in her window. One night at a party things changed between Lindy and Lucas. Lucas hurt Lindy badly and I mean badly. If I could have throat punched the boy I would have for Lindy. Lindy is justifiably hurt and heartbroken and cuts Lucas out of her life. They go years without seeing one another until Lindy heads home after finishing college. I love childhood friends to lover stories. They are auto-buys for me! It’s the history and the struggles that attract me most to these kinds of story lines, so when I read the synopsis for Windows I was all kinds of happy to get my hands on this book. I liked the story of Lucas and Lindy but I didn’t love it unfortunately.
What I liked was how uncomplicated things were. Once Lindy came back to town and met up with Lucas again they quickly talked and gave their friendship a try. Did things resolve overnight? Heck no but I liked that they communicated right away instead of the whole don’t talk to me I’m going to be mean and ignore you thing. This was refreshing and I liked it! It worked for me. I liked that once Lindy was back, Lucas made his move to rectify things and man up to his mistakes and how poorly he treated Lindy. The little glimpses at the beginning of each chapter of Lindy and Lucas’s childhood was really cute. The sex was hot. Oh boy did these two burn the sheets with their mattress tango. Lucas is a dirty talker and I enjoyed his need to mark and claim Lindy in every way. This was pretty HOT!
I also liked how close knit the families are. The parents for both couples are very much in the picture and play important roles in the books. They are supportive and bring a lot of love and support. Tara was another character I enjoyed. She also grew up with Lucas and Lindy. Her father became Lucas’s dad new partner. So all of them were close but Tara was more in Lindy’s corner after Lucas’s a-hole move! Tara is a good friend and has a story that I hope will be told. I hope she gets a book. I’d love to find out more about her especially after reading the epilogue and the mention of Tara and something that happens to her. So I am hoping there is a book for her.
There was an element of suspense in this book. I have to say that it was really easy to spot the bad guys right away. They were crazy enough and all the red flags were thrown in your face all over the place. So when it was revealed who did it, it was not a surprise. It wasn’t very suspenseful at all. This fell short in that aspect since the bad guys could be spotted miles away.
I really wanted to love this story but the dialogue in this book kept taking me out of the story. It was monotonic the whole time and flat. Because of this it made it hard for me to connect with the characters. In some places I knew I should feel sad and hurt for the heroine but I didn’t feel anything.
I did like the book enough, that I will still check out book #2 of this series when it comes out. As I said above I’m crossing my fingers that book #2 will be about Tara (crossing fingers). This was a solid three pages turned for me. It piqued my interest enough that I’ll check out other books by this author.
