This essay traces the history of the universe and of the earth as a prelude to describing the development of religions over the past 2500 years. Particular emphasis is placed on the Judeo-Christian tradition. It examines the blessings and curses of Islam and Christianity as well as the more common perceptions of God. It offers an inclusive vision of 'God' and makes the case for the abandonment or radical reform of extant religions that are based on irrelevant and dangerous ancient books and superstitions. It posits a scenario whereby the considerable fellowship and community benefits of organized religion can be realized by new organizations committed to a set of compassionate secular values, that are motivated to spearhead 'peace on earth; goodwill towards men.' Finally, it urges everyone to embrace a new, inclusive metaphor for 'God' either individually, together as families, or with like-minded others in new or existing groups.
