This book chronicles the career of the man who helped shape the Marine Corps in the twentieth century by transforming them into a highly effective amphibious assaultforce and Cold War force-in-readiness. Gerald C. Thomas served as a Marine Sergeant and Officer, 1917-1956, to the rank of lieutenant general. He saw combat at BelleauWood, Soissons, Guadalcanal, Bougainville, and in Korea, 1951-1952. He also participated in the creation of the Fleet Marine Force and its preservation in the post-World War II conflicts over defense organization. His service reflects the Marine Corps' transition from a colonial expeditionary force to the Cold War air-ground force in-readiness.
