Entertaining fragments of a nomadic, and sometimes working, life from the author of the autobiographical Not Half A Life. Travels with a Briefcase is part autobiography, part geography, with here and there a little dash of history. It was originally conceived as the story of the author's working life abroad, minus the work. Peter Knight's career took him, for reasons he still finds somewhat baffling, to many far-flung, exotic corners of the globe. In this light-hearted account of his experiences, he retraces his steps to evoke memories and impressions of some very foreign parts. From the Philippines to Salvador Allende's Chile, via such alluring tourist spots as Qaddafi's immediate post-coup Libya, Haiti under the notorious Baby Doc Duvallier and pre-liberation Czechoslovakia, there is never a dull moment. A worthy successor to Not Half A Life, which chronicles the author's early years.
