This interdisciplinary textbook starts with a historical retrospective on the origins and key developments in this emerging area. It then looks at the different transduction processes that can be exploited and considers some basic theoretical concepts such as the role of chemical transport, equilibrium phenomena and the way in which these influence the performance of the sensor. Succeeding chapters consider methods modifying the transducer interface to impart selectivity via chemical or biological means.
The book is aimed at senior-level undergraduate/graduate students on chemistry/analytical chemistry courses but also at students in life science and engineering programs. It will also have strong appeal to those working in both industrial research and development and technology evaluation and patenting.
