In this story of a year on an American farm, the author looks at the problems of small farmers. Mike and Sarah are alarmed when they learn that their school will close, while the whole family fear they will lose their home as the prices of maize and milk are low and little money is coming in. Mike and Sarah's mother plants pumpkins and flowers to sell and their father gets a winter job in a factory. When in the spring things are no better, the family must find some way to earn money - or lose their farm. Thomas Locker's first book, "Where the River Begins", was a "New York Times" Best Illustrated Children's Book Award winner in 1984. He has since published three other books including "The Boy who Held Back the Sea".
