Giants of the Earth is the somewhat true story of a man, Will, his brother, his friends and a woman, Isabel. At forty-three Will remembers his middle twenties-the dark humor and pranks his pack of friends practiced on one another, the bond he felt for his family and the woman, Isabel, who with her own burden of loss comes nearer the authentic Will than anyone else. He fly-fishes, builds homes and plays chess, rugby and muddy football. "We could not see the ocean from the parking lot, as the water was obscured by dunes, but we were close enough to hear the big waves beat the beach. We were young, most of us were in love, we were with good friends and the sound of the unseen Pacific roared in our ears. We went surging up over the dunes at a gallop."
