Falmouth is the most interesting town in one of the country's most popular tourist areas, and the town and its magnificent harbour possess a fascinating history. The photographs in this book can tell only the more recent story, but earlier prints and a useful introduction bring to life Pendennis Castle during the Civil War and the heyday of the Post Office Packet Service. Much of Falmouth's prosperity has derived from its harbour, reputedly the world's third largest area of sheltered, tidal water, and the various commercial and pleasure uses to which it has been put are included here. The arrival of the railway and the development of the docks, especially during the two World Wars, have led to the gradual expansion of the town and the growth of the tourist industry. These changes, as well as the slum clearance of the late 1920s and early 1930s, are all recorded here in these photographs. This book is a delight for residents and visitors of this Cornish town.
