For several decades, a number of chemical substances have been approved for use as productivity enhancers in livestock production. Historically, approval has depended on the scientific criteria of safety, efficacy and quality. During the 1980s the use of hormonal substances was questioned, stilbenes and their derivatives were banned on safety grounds, while other steroid hormones were banned in 1988 for less clearly specified, "socioeconomic" reasons. The advent of new products, developed through biotechnology, makes the social and economic impact of these substances a matter of continuing debate. This book begins with an outline of the range of substances with current and potential use as productivity enhancers and an overview of the political and social debate over their use. Subsequent chapters then examine alternative economic approaches to impact assessment and discuss the practical and theoretical issues confronting researchers in this area.
