This is a guide for professionals engaged in the treatment of depressed and anxious patients. It consists of two parts. Part I includes a brief account of the phenomenology, epidemiology and diagnosis of these emotional disorders. The cognitive model is described and cognitive therapeutic techniques arising from this model are fully elucidated. Part II illustrated the use of cognitive thereapy techniques by detailed case studies followed through treatment. Specific problems which present themselves in therapy, such as suicidal behaviour, bulimic and obsessional symptoms are dealt with. The reader will also find guidelines for dealing with common problems encountered in therapy, for example, non-compliance with the model and with techniques and return to health.
